Oooh, how I love photographing a new space I’ve never used before. This is The Aero Space Museum in the NE of Calgary. I’ve wanted to photograph there for a long time and the opportunity came up this winter for our friends. There was very little light in the actual museum so we moved to the next door hangar. Sweet light but quite chilly this December day, so there was lots of running, jumping and tickling to get everyone warmed up. “I’m cold” soon turned into “This is FUN!” I can see this location being a fabulous location for photos in the spring… when it’s a bit warmer and there’s not as much snow covering the roof. There were times when we’d hear a huge WHOOOOSH as the snow would slide down! It made us jump the first time it happened!
I’ve become friends with this fabulous mom over the past couple years. Our sons spend the morning together every day before kindergarten and he comes home with lots of stories of their adventures together. We are so lucky to have them in our lives.
I must admit, I get a bit nervous photographing friends as I put this imaginary layer of pressure on myself to capture them as I know them. Over and over again, I am reminded of what I’ve learned through the years. All the technical and compositional photo stuff is just there now. I need to apply it but it’s only the foundation to the picture. It is all about engaging and connecting with the kids… whether I have known them for years, months or minutes. That is the secret to receiving sweet smiles, authentic giggles and moments of love.
