Here is another INSPIRED shoot where I was solely shooting for me, working on a vision that I have and seeing how it grows and what it ends up to be. My first was of my friend, Fawna that you can find here and this is my second. I am really looking forward to doing more of this approach to photography for both myself and together with clients.
It’s kinda fun, (hopefully you think so anyway!) to hear how such shoots come to fruition, so here I am to share! How’d it start? I saw an image from Vale’s Greenhouse that they posted on facebook. It was of one of their many greenhouses … the rows upon rows of small plants getting their life started in coziness and warmth. As soon as I saw that picture, I envisioned the first shot of Hailey you see below. It’s pretty much exactly how I pictured it. Breaking the rule of thirds, having her straight in the middle with a wide angle lens and the plants on either side. So the inspiration had already begun just with the flash of a single smartphone image someone else shared.
The idea further developed in my mind. Vale’s Greenhouse in Black Diamond is where my mom worked for a few years and most likely would still be working there today hadn’t a stupid thing called colon cancer got in the way. So there was definitely a strong pull to this particular setting in an emotional way … mom was so enamoured with plants and flowers and the people who worked there. If you go there, (and I highly suggest you take the trip to this garden paradise) there’s even a chair to the right after you go through the entrance dedicated to mom that says “This chair is for Barb and for all the tea we never got to drink”. So there was no question that this was exactly where the shoot would be. With permission from them, the location was all confirmed!
Mom was also pretty enamoured with her granddaughter (and vice versa) so I just knew Hailey would be my subject. To have pictures of her in the place where her Grandma Barb worked was special and I know these pictures would mean loads in years to come. At one point in the shoot Hailey looked at me and said “I wish Grandma Barb was here right now Mom and I wish all that was just a dream”. I couldn’t agree with you more, my sweet little girl. So yes, model picked and we were rolling!
Throw in the sweet dresses from Matilda Jane Clothing and fun rubber boots and voila, that’s all I needed to make my vision come true. Oh and that fun floppy hat I bought years ago that looks much more adorable on her than me.
I wasn’t sure how I wanted to edit it. I could have definitely edited the way I do my family and kid shoots and I think they would turn out beautifully. I decided, instead, to blanket it with a bit more vintage-y of a feel… perhaps for the nostalgic side to this shoot. I may even try editing them a different way later, but this is how I felt today!
Thank you to Vale’s Greenhouse to letting me shoot in your gorgeous space. And a thank you to darling Hailey who did such a wonderful job, and enjoyed the strawberry milkshake I promised her all the way back to Calgary.
