Summer Photography Camp for Kids

I’m just so, so, so excited about this post!!  I’m going to take you back to my childhood for a minute…

If I go back to when I was 11, I had a small little camera I would use.   I remember using up way more film than my mother had hoped taking pictures around the ranch where I grew up.   I remember dressing up my cats in my doll clothes and snapping their photo.  (So sorry, Peaches and Marmalade!!!)   I took lots of pictures of the horses, cows and sheep.   I remember patiently waiting a full week for film to be developed at the shop in High River.  I remember filling up sticky pages of photo albums with 4×6 prints.

Photography is a whole different world now.  But one thing most certainly remains the same.   The excitement and sense of accomplishment that comes for a child (and adults too!) when they take a photo of which they are proud.  I can’t tell you how many goosebumps, tears and all-round good vibes I have had teaching kids in schools the past couple years.   It’s this love for photography, my love & respect for kids and everyone’s desire for self-expression that have come together with the creation of my first photography camp for kids.   And this is why I’m so excited about this post.  There will be two camps, for two different age groups, held this summer!!

5 DAY CAMP FOR 10 – 13 YEAR OLDS

This 5 day camp will be held the week of July 29th.  It will run from 9 am – 4pm from Monday, July 29th to Friday, August 2nd.   I am thrilled to announce the camp will take place at Wolf Willow Studio in the Spruce Cliff area.  Wolf Willow is owned by a dear friend Michelena Bamford who is a renowned mosaic artist.  The beautiful space is full of positive energy and will be a perfect hub for our camp.  The art studio is a short walk from some nature areas so we will be sure to go on photo walks on a couple of our days.  There is also a park right across from the street so we will have a great combination of indoor and outdoor time.

In the course, we will cover lots of ground.  My goal is for your kids to be comfortably moving in manual mode on their cameras.  I believe the best way to learn photography is hands-on, so there will be lots of time to practice the new concepts we will learn and discuss together.   I bring in lots of different ways to learn:  slideshows, games, examples, challenges, discussions, critiques, and some methods I probably haven’t even thought up yet!   Together, we will be talking lots about frame composition, creative techniques, aperture, shutter speeds, ISO and lots more… all while expressing ourselves with this beautiful medium of digital film.   The participants will come out of the camp with the confidence and skills to work their camera as well as matted prints, art projects featuring their images and a folder of their digital images that will be sent your way.

I will be joined by another lovely young lady, Alecia, for the week. I strongly believe in the power of displaying our kids work so Alecia will be working with your kids photographs to create stunning art pieces.  She is in the process of completing her education degree at the University of Calgary and has told me how grateful she is to be pursuing a life practice wherein she can be inspired by the young people of this world. She has run art camps and programs at Wolf Willow Studio in years past and I am super excited for her to be part of our camp!!

A camera which has manual mode is required.  A DSLR is recommended but not necessary.   Lunch will need to be provided by yourselves (not included in the camp).  And the most important requirements; an open mind, positive attitude and desire to learn!!

At the end of the camp, we will be showing off our work in a Photo Gala on the Friday afternoon.  Be sure to book the time off as you will definitely receive a special invitation!

You can register for the 10-13 year old camp through this link.     The cost is $449 plus gst.

3 DAY CAMP FOR 13-16 YEAR OLDS

The 3 day camp will be held from 10am – 4pm from Tuesday, August 20nd to Thursday, August 22nd. This camp is for 13-16 year olds. It will take place at Elboya Heights/ Britannia Community Hall  (416 Park Ave SW). We will have a great combination of indoor and outdoor time as hall is right at the western edge of Stanley Park.

My goal is for the teens to be comfortably moving in manual mode on their cameras. I believe the best way to learn photography is hands-on, so there will be lots of time to practice the new concepts we will learn and discuss together. I bring in lots of different ways to learn: slideshows, examples, challenges, discussions, critiques, and some methods I probably haven’t even thought up yet!   Together, we will be talking lots about frame composition, creative techniques, aperture, shutter speeds, ISO and lots more… all while expressing ourselves with this beautiful medium of digital film.   As the camp is just 3 days long, we will be going at a lively pace but I am sure this older group will have no troubles taking it all in!!

I will be joined by Alecia for the week. The kids will connect beautifully with Alecia who is just finishing up her education degree at U of C.   She’ll be there to host the camp with me and also create an art piece out of their prints .. a perfect reminder for the teens at how creative they are!!

A camera which has manual mode is required.  A DSLR is recommended but not necessary.   Lunch will need to be provided by yourselves (not included in the camp).  And the most important requirements; an open mind, positive attitude and desire to learn!!

You can register for the teen camp here.  The cost is $275.

I can’t wait for these camps!!   I can’t wait to have a wonderful experience with your children.
