THE STORY BEHIND THE SESSION
Family with Twin Newborns
This shoot was a culmination of joy, sadness, relief and acknowledgement. This young family prepared to welcome their triplet sons into the world, new siblings for their little girl. The mum bought 3 blue knitted hearts that she wanted to incorporate into the photos when the boys arrived. These precious brothers are holding one of those three hearts to acknowledge Jude, their angel brother who helped them survive. Janet and Amy both spent hours with the family, through tears, tea and even some laughter we captured such tender moments with this family. Whether that time involved laying on the floor and playing dolls with their daughter, or listening to their proud father play guitar for his family … we know the importance that photos play in our lives, and this was one shoot that will stay with us for years to come.
Cupcake with Grandma
I was invited by a family to come to their home on the outskirts of Calgary to celebrate their Mum’s 75th birthday. Her husband had arranged this surprise photo-shoot a few weeks prior and her whole family was gathered round. We had a beautiful walk through the forest surrounding their home and got some beautiful images; but after we returned home I surprised the grandmother with a cupcake and candle and a pink balloon. It enabled some tender moments to unfold, as all of her grandchildren ran over to help her blow out her candle. It’s those planned-for-but-unexpected moments that reveals the true connections between families.
Family with Grown-Ups
I’ve been friends with this woman since our 2nd year in University residence. Our friendship spanned miles and countries as we studied in Denmark together and met up in Kenya and Tanzania as our work and travel unfolded. There are some friends who come into your life for different seasons or periods, but she is one I’ll hold dear forever. When she found her far-away love, we were so excited to celebrate their marriage, on two continents and hoped one day they’d start a family. Life and illness sometimes strike at unforeseen times … we had planned a photoshoot meant for this friend nd her mother as her mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Thankfully, her Dad was also there we also got some photos of he and his wife, and he and his daughter. A few very short months later, as this friend was excited to share the news that she was expecting a baby, her father suddenly passed away. The photos were some of the last taken of him. Happy, healthy, loving, silly, strong. And the young baby girl that she was carrying has come to be a source of joy and light in so many lives. She came at the right time, to give a chance for healing and hope to renew. I’ve been fortunate to photograph her at different stages of her young life and continue to be inspired by her curiosity, fortitude and strength … which she most definitely gets from her mother.
