Brand Spotlight: Karen Fron Design

February 24, 2025

Karen is an incredibly talented interior designer. From the very beginning, she was clear that she wanted her brand imagery to go beyond the expected.

She didn’t just want photographs of pretty, yet empty, spaces.  She wanted to show the homes she designs in a way that felt honest, lived-in, and deeply human.

As Karen so beautifully puts it:

“It’s my belief that our homes are our sanctuaries. We each have within us our own unique blueprint for the type of home that shelters our spirit.”

That belief became the foundation for everything we created together. Every image was rooted in storytelling — capturing not just the design itself, but the feeling of being truly at home within it. And along the way, we’ve had so much fun collaborating on the wide variety of projects we’ve brought to life together so far.

“I want to capture the essence of the spaces where my clients gather, eat, rest and play. I want to visually show the rich stories that are created in beautiful spaces.”

Type of Session

Full Brand Story (3–4 hours) – at her home
Custom Brand Sessions — Client Homes

Karen and I have worked together on numerous sessions over the past couple years, photographing a variety of homes she’s designed. But it all began with a Full Brand Story session, focused on Karen in her own stunning home.

This initial session allowed us to create a cohesive library of images that reflected not only who Karen is as a designer, but how she lives and thinks about space.

Full Brand Story sessions are truly the full-meal deal. They include a strategy call where we talk through your brand, your values, and what you want your imagery to communicate. By the time photo day arrives, we have a clear vision and plan.

On shoot day, Kelly Jo is on hand to provide full makeup, assist with hair, help select outfits, and support styling throughout the session — ensuring everything looks polished yet natural.  And if you’ve ever met Kelly, you know she brings the fun. Our sessions are full of energy, encouragement, and more than a little laughter — which makes a huge difference in helping people feel at ease on camera.

As we moved into photographing client homes, each session became more custom. Depending on the scope of the renovations and the story Karen wanted to tell, we stayed flexible with timing, pricing, and packages — ensuring the photography always served the work, not the other way around.  Branding packages are simply a starting point; together, we shape each session to reflect your vision, your goals, and the unique story you want to share.

Focus of Our Session

With our strategy call , one thing became very clear: Karen wanted to show how people truly live in their homes.

We talked about how she intentionally designs around real human needs — how people:

  • eat
  • gather
  • learn
  • play
  • refresh
  • rest
  • organize
  • personalize

When homes are designed with these needs in mind, they don’t just look beautiful — they actively contribute to a rich, healthy life. That philosophy guided every shoot we did together.

Karen shared this insight:

“I was tired of seeing heavily styled homes that were perfect, sterile, and looked like no one lived there. I wanted photos that featured the actual people that occupied these spaces and showcased their relationship to their interiors.”

And so, instead of photographing pristine, untouched rooms, we photographed people reading, cooking, resting, gathering — living in the spaces Karen created.

The Process & Story Highlights

Photographing people inside their homes is a privilege. These are sanctuaries — deeply personal spaces — and both Karen and I approach that responsibility with care and respect.

“Working with Janet the first time was a joy as she carefully listened and understood what I was wanting to convey by having the homeowners in my photos. Not just pictures of interiors, her photographs show the deep connection and sense of comfort that a warm and inviting home provides.”

From the first branding session to the many shoots that followed, the process always centered on helping homeowners feel comfortable, relaxed, and seen in their beautiful spaces Karen designed.

“From our first branding session, to our many photo shoots together, Janet always makes the homeowners feel comfortable and relaxed. She understands that we have been invited into people’s sanctuaries and she shows great reverence for the opportunity to photograph these sacred spaces.”

Karen prepares thoughtfully for each session, identifying which areas of the home she wants highlighted and the intention behind each space. This level of collaboration ensures we honour both the design vision and the lived experience within the home.

I also make a point of photographing Karen during each session — capturing her caring for the space, connecting with clients, and engaging in her process. These images not only document her work but also continue to build her visual brand and library over time, helping to tell her story and showcase the way she brings spaces to life.

It’s important to note that defining your brand is the client’s role — my job isn’t to create it for you. I need to know what matters most to you before I can execute effectively. Taking the time to really think about your brand, your priorities, and the story you want to tell is essential. In Karen’s example, I wouldn’t necessarily know how much thought and meaning goes into a particular space unless she shares it with me.   I wouldn’t have known how important it is to her to have the homeowners in the spaces she creates.

Once your priorities and vision are clear, my role is to bring your brand to life visually — to tell your story through images that reflect your values, your aesthetic, and the experience you want to share with your audience. Having clear ideas and intentions ensures the photography captures what’s truly important and then we can create a library of images together that visually storytell your brand with authenticity and impact.

How is Karen Using her Images

For Karen, photography was about communicating something words alone couldn’t fully express.

“I wanted my website to show the importance of a warm and inviting home. Words alone couldn’t convey the importance of our dwellings and the way our spaces can affect behaviour.”

Karen is truly the queen of using her images. Take a look at her website at www.karenfron.com — the images are everywhere. She consistently uses them across her website, newsletters, and social media, and she is incredibly generous about tagging and crediting me in every post. Thank you, Karen.

Working with Karen has been one of those collaborations that reminds me why I love what I do.She even collaborated with me on designing my holiday Photo Nook scenes last season, and we’ll be working together again on many other sets for the Photo Nook this year.

I’m endlessly grateful for the introduction to Karen of Karen Fron Design.  It became the catalyst for not only deeply rewarding creative work and collaboration, but also a wonderful friendship..  Hugs to you Karen!!!
